You do not need to understand after-treatment chemistry to keep a diesel particulate filter healthy. A handful of habits account for most of the difference between a filter that runs 150,000 km and one that blocks at 50,000.
Weekly
- Take at least one sustained run of 20 minutes or more at consistent highway speed. This is the single most effective thing you can do — it lets passive regeneration happen naturally
- Keep the fuel tank above a quarter. Many vehicles will not initiate a regeneration below that level
Every service
- Confirm the correct low-SAPS oil specification is being used, and check it yourself rather than assuming. Wrong oil is the leading preventable cause of premature ash loading
- Have differential pressure checked, even with no warning light present
- Replace the fuel filter on schedule — contaminated fuel damages injectors, and injector faults destroy DPFs
- Ask for the regeneration abort count to be read
Learn to recognise an active regeneration
Most vehicles do not tell you explicitly. The signs are a raised idle speed, the cooling fan running when it otherwise would not, a distinctive hot or acrid smell, and sometimes a slight change in engine note. If you notice these, keep driving if it is safe to do so and let the cycle finish. Switching off mid-cycle is one of the most damaging things you can do, and it is entirely avoidable once you know what to look for.
Mistakes that cost the most
- 1Ignoring the warning light and continuing to drive — the filter loads further and the repair escalates from a clean to a replacement
- 2Using conventional engine oil in a DPF-equipped engine
- 3Repeatedly switching off during regeneration
- 4Only ever driving short urban trips with no highway running at all
- 5Believing a fuel-tank additive will clear an ash-loaded filter — no additive removes ash
- 6Having the filter "deleted" — illegal, fails PUC, voids insurance, and destroys resale value
